[Warded to Team One (Moody, Doug, Kenneth, Algernon, Catriona, Rufus, Barnabus, Vindictus, Camilla, Arsenius, Conrad, Bilius) and Dedalus]
I trust you've all paid close attention to Professor Viridian's explanation of how we're going to go about this. Starting off in a defensive position may not be as dramatic as going in guns blazing, but make no mistake about it; we're not going to be sitting ducks. In fact, we've got the advantage of having them come to us. If we can ward off the initial assault, we'll be poised for a quick counterattack. But our primary objective has to be holding them off long enough to retaliate – which means strong defense. We've got to identify our strengths; there's no sense positioning our weakest defenders at the front of the circle, unless we're trying to lose. Our opportunity to attack will come soon enough, but only if we survive long enough to launch it.
With that in mind, I'd like your input on battle strategy, particularly with regard to how you think you would best be utilized. Don't tell me that you're brilliant at everything. The more honest you are about your weaknesses, the better chance we'll have of positioning ourselves to overcome them.

We've got to go about this fairly. Much as the lot of you would like to pair up with your friends, that's not war. You're going to fight alongside people you barely know and people you hate. Darren's right; this isn't Quidditch. That's why we ought to split ourselves up equally and randomly, and then sort out captains. Has anyone got an objection to a coin toss for who goes where?

I'd like to think all of you've got enough sense not to mess about and I reckon I've an easier job of it than the fellows, but I'll warn you just the same. War is no place for immaturity.

[Warded to Delmi.]
Delmi, I
I don't want to
I wish I didn't have to say. I've been trying to find a way not to say this. If they published the names of the officers in the paper – if they answered my damned letters, I wouldn't have a reason to. I'd know and you'd either know or you'd never have to, because what's the point of upsetting you if he's alright after all? It's senseless, that, and I don't know what good could come of it. But the wondering and the secrecy, it's eating me alive. You're my best friend, Delmi, or at least the best girl one. I love you too much to lie to you forever. I know I'm going to feel guilty and stupid and daft if it turns out he's fine and you've worried for nothing, but I can't pretend anymore.
These wars, they're as real as the fingers in front of my face and there's no running away from how wretched things get – how much more wretched things are going to get when we're in the midst of it all and we've got no choice but to lift our chins and bear it. Some of our classmates, they're not going to make it. No one's saying that, because no one wants to think about it. It's easier to think we'll all be alright because we're proud and we're brave and we're determined. But that's not the reality of it. People are going to die and be captured and God knows what else, and pretending that's not going to happen is only going to make things worse. That's why I have to tell you. If I care about you at all, if we're going to live through this, I've got to tell you.
I need to talk to you about something.

[Warded to Professor Flitwick, Professor Merrythought, and the girls in Gwen's Thursday night group.]
I know that what's going on is bloody unthinkable, but I think Dagmar would want us to do our best to be prepared. There's no sense sitting about when we can better learn to defend ourselves, for both our country and our friends. With that in mind, Professor Flitwick has kindly agreed to supervise some extra practise sessions for anyone who'd like to come. It's your call, of course, but I think we'd all benefit from it.

I apologise for bothering the both of you, but with all of the chaos and terror, a couple of the girls and I were wondering if either of you might be free to supervise any additional practice sessions. We understand if you're too busy trying to find the culprit behind the attacks, of course, but I reckoned it was worth asking on the off-chance that you had the time. Sitting 'round helpless and worrying, it's a bit difficult.

[Warded to Professor Merrythought, Delmi, Ann, Dagmar, Augusta, Agatha, Millicent, Minerva, Polly, Juliet, and anyone else I forgot!]
Starting tonight, Professor Merrythought has graciously agreed to take over Professor Flitwick's duties in overseeing our practices. It's more important than ever that we be prepared for whatever the war may bring, whether we're on the front lines, in support areas, or at school. I can think of no better way to improve our odds of survival than to take heed of the wisdom she has to offer.
